During the depression, four orphan siblings, Henry (Wells), Jessie (Taylor-Gordon), Violet (Vega), and Benny (Holleman) Alden go in search of their grandfather (Caine). When they hear a plot to place all of them into boarding schools, they flee before meeting their grandfather. They find refuge in an abandoned boxcar that they call home. With the help of the friendly Dr. Moore (Holme), they find odd jobs, such as picking cherries. They fall in crisis when Violet is sick and enter an essay contest to obtain the $25 prize. Unbeknownst to them, their own grandfather is presiding over the contest.
